I’m not talking about the physical balance. Yes, that can exist and is definitely something to work on. More on that to come in a future article. Right now I’m referring to “balancing” life, responsibilities, priorities.
Is that even possible?
Do you remember the 1987 movie Baby Boom, starring Diane Keaton (I do realize I’m aging myself here)? In the movie, Diane’s character, J.C., struggles to balance her personal life with her work, after essentially inheriting a toddler. Ultimately, she leaves her demanding city job and moves to the countryside with her adopted daughter. She struggles, and even has a nervous breakdown, but eventually finds a way to focus on her daughter while making a living. She even finds love.
Even though it was a Hollywood movie, I often think of it when we place expectations on ourselves of finding this magical balance where everything gets done exactly as we hoped. All accomplished with a calm mind, of course. I question that this is even possible.
You may now be wondering why in the world I started a business called “Unearth Your Balance.”
Good question. Honestly, I don’t think we can evenly divvy out our energy to priorities, responsibilities, and just…life. I think we would drive ourselves nuts trying to do that. Certain areas of your life simply require more attention, more energy. This changes, constantly. When my kids were really young I didn’t have our house as clean as I wanted. I tried. I wanted my house to be neat and tidy. But caring for my little humans was a higher priority. Did I feel guilty? Yes. I did. Do I wish I could go back and tell my younger self that it’s okay to let things go and focus on what matters then? Absolutely.
What in your life requires more of YOU, right now? Your kids? Grandkids? Your job? Your health? Taking care of a loved one?
When I started my business I wanted a name that described how I want to serve my clients, how I want to serve you. “Unearth Your Balance” doesn’t mean to find a balance where you have evenly portioned out your energy to each priority in your life. Heck no. It means to find what type of balance will serve you best where you are right now. This may mean leaving those dirty dishes in the sink, not having a neat and tidy house, not getting that 60 minute workout in, or not making dinner every night. Because right now your priorities need to be elsewhere. That’s okay. It doesn’t mean you won’t ever have a clean house, or exercise when you want, or cook healthy meals. Priorities shift, as we shift.
Unearthing your balance also means to find balance within yourself. I do believe that physical balance is big part of this (more on that later). Hopefully, you can find moments, even short ones, to pause, breathe, and listen to your body.
Maybe we can take a lesson from J.C. in Baby Boom and realize that not everything can be a high priority, before having a nervous breakdown like J.C. did. We can focus on what matters now.
What matters to you, right now?
