Have you ever tried a new movement and thought, Why can't I get my arms and legs to do this at the same time?
You know what you're supposed to do. You can see the movement and understand the directions. But somehow your arm goes one way, your leg goes another, and suddenly you have to stop and really think about it.
That moment can feel frustrating. But it can also be a sign that your brain is doing some really valuable work.
Movement Isn't Just Work for Your Muscles
We know movement is good for our bodies. It helps us maintain strength, mobility, balance, and the ability to keep doing the things we want to do as we get older.
But movement also asks a lot of our brains. Your brain is constantly taking in information, deciding what needs to happen next, and coordinating your muscles to make it happen. When you walk across an uneven yard, catch your balance after missing a step, or learn a new movement pattern, your brain and body are working together.
When a movement is new or unfamiliar, you can't rely quite as much on autopilot. You have to pay attention, coordinate, and make adjustments as you go.
That little bit of extra work can be valuable.
Familiar Movement Is Still Important
Before we go any further, I want to make something clear: new isn't always better.
There's tremendous value in repetition. If you want to get stronger, you need to keep challenging your muscles. If you want to improve your balance, you need to practice balancing. Repeating familiar movements helps you build strength, improve skills, and become more confident doing them.
So I'm not suggesting you need a completely different workout every day or that you should constantly search for the newest, most complicated exercise. In fact, constantly changing what you're doing can make it harder to build strength or improve a skill.
There's room for both.
Familiar movement helps us practice and build. New movement gives our brains and bodies an opportunity to learn and adapt.
New Doesn't Have to Mean Complicated
When I talk about trying new movement, I'm not talking about elaborate "brain exercises" or movements so complicated that you spend the entire time confused.
Sometimes all it takes is changing one small thing:
- Walk a familiar route in the opposite direction.
- Add an arm movement while you're balancing.
- Step sideways or diagonally instead of always moving forward.
- Learn a new transition in yoga.
- Cross one arm toward the opposite side of your body.
- Change the speed or rhythm of a familiar movement.
- Try something you're not immediately good at.
The movement itself doesn't necessarily have to be difficult. The challenge may simply come from having to pay attention in a different way.
And I think that's an important distinction, especially when we talk about continuing to challenge ourselves after 45.
Challenge Doesn't Always Mean Heavier or Harder
When we hear the word challenge, we tend to think about doing more. Lift a heavier weight. Hold something longer. Do more repetitions. Move faster.
Those can all be useful ways to challenge your body. But challenge can also look like asking your brain and body to solve a new movement problem.
Think about bird dog, for example. You're on your hands and knees, extending one arm and the opposite leg. It sounds simple enough—until you're trying to remember which arm goes with which leg while keeping your balance and controlling the rest of your body.
You're building strength, but you're also coordinating, balancing, focusing, and adjusting at the same time.
That's a different kind of challenge, and it's one we shouldn't be so quick to avoid just because we don't immediately get it right.
You Don't Have to Be Good at It
I see this happen in classes all the time. I'll introduce a movement that requires a little more coordination, and someone will laugh and say, "I can't do this."
But often, they can do it. They just can't do it automatically yet.
There's a difference.
When you've done something hundreds or thousands of times, your brain doesn't have to give it the same level of attention. That's useful—we certainly don't want to have to concentrate on every single step we take across the kitchen.
But when you're learning something unfamiliar, you have to slow down and pay attention again. Maybe you lose track of which side you're on. Maybe you have to watch me a few times. Maybe you stop, reset, and try again.
Being a little awkward at something new doesn't mean you're bad at it. It may simply mean you're learning.
Why This Matters after 45
After 45, we've had decades to figure out what we're comfortable doing. We have our favorite walking routes, familiar movements, and activities we know we're good at. There's nothing wrong with returning to the things we enjoy.
But there's also value in occasionally stepping outside those familiar patterns.
Our bodies are made for movement, and our brains require it, too. Giving ourselves different ways to move creates opportunities to pay attention, react, coordinate, and adapt.
And think about how much of real life requires exactly that.
We step around something in the driveway. Turn while carrying a bag. Catch ourselves when the dog suddenly changes direction. Reach behind us while getting out of the car. Our days don't happen in perfectly predictable movement patterns, and our brains and bodies are constantly figuring things out together.
It's worth giving them opportunities to practice.
One Thing to Try Today
You don't need to learn an entirely new exercise today. Instead, take something familiar and change one thing.
If you're walking, take a few safe steps sideways. If you're practicing balance, add a slow arm movement. If you're doing a familiar exercise, slow it down and notice how much more control it requires.
Then pay attention to what happens. Do you suddenly have to concentrate a little more? Does the movement feel awkward at first? Do you have to stop and try again?
Instead of immediately thinking, I'm not good at this, get curious about what you're experiencing.
Your brain may simply be figuring something out.
